Switzerland's Climate and Weather
In general climate of Switzerland may be considered as temperate. But, the weather conditions of different parts of country vary due to variety of relief. Four major European climates affect Switzerland. From the west, influenced by the North Atlantic Drift, come mild and moist air masses; dry and cold air arrives from the North Arctic areas; continental air from the east brings dry colder air in winter and warmer air in summer; and relatively moist and warm air flows northward from the Mediterranean.Â
In the mountains, the climate becomes colder with increasing altitude, but in winter, they are located above the blanket of fog and low clouds that often covers the plateau, so they are also sunnier in this season.
In the south, the Canton of Ticino has a milder climate, though very rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms in summer and heavy rains in autumn.
From July to August the daytime temperature range is 18 to 28 °C (65° – 82° F) and from January to February the range is -2 to 7 °C (28° – 45° F). In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C (46° – 59° F).
Fog is a very common occurrence in the cold months of the year. From late autumn through to spring, low-lying fog regularly forms, predominantly in high pressure areas. This tends to occur mostly along rivers and lakes as the air above these is very damp. The cooling of the air then causes local condensation.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit Switzerland is from May to September. The temperatures are mild to warm, and the landscape is free from snow. Late spring has moderate temperatures and sees an increase in sunshine. The High Alps is a popular tourist destination in the summer. Some resorts are open for skiing, even in June. The best time to explore the mountains is from June to August.
So Swiss winter appears to be pretty cold and snowy while summer is warm and rainy. Given that choosing most suitable season completely depends on type of planned activities such as skiing, sightseeing, eco-tourism and so on.
