Escape the ordinary on the Road trip - Gotthard Pass
Gotthard Pass is a mountain pass in the Alps traversing the Saint-Gotthard Massif and connecting northern and southern Switzerland. The most known entrance gate is also known as King of Mountain Passes and St. Gotthard Pass. The pass is an important motor and railway route between central Europe and Italy as well as the most direct link between Zürich and Lugano. It is 6,916 feet (2,108 metres) above the sea level and is 16 miles (26 km) long in the canton of Ticino.
The Gotthard Road Tunnel, opened in 1980 or the 57 kilometers long Gotthard railway tunnel, opened in 1882 in Switzerland runs from Göschenen in the canton of Uri at its northern portal, to Airolo in Ticino to the south.
The pass is named about 1300 in honor of Saint Gotthard, german bishop of Hildesheim. The Gotthard Pass is the sources of great rivers, the Rhine, Rhone, Reuss and Ticino, making it the wellspring of Europe.
The route has a long history that number of men troubled to triumph over a hostile nature. No matter what your vehicle is. Passing the Gotthard is adventurous. There are public buses (Andermatt-Airolo) passing through during summer season. You can hope into one and enjoy the adventure.
