History and Culture of Zurich
Zurich Old Town is a cultural, social and historical melting pot. It was already a prosperous center of commerce in the early Middle Ages. The Reformation of 1519 gave the economy such a boost that the town soon became the financial center of Switzerland. This has remained unchanged to the present day and that is why you can find one of the most luxurious shopping avenues around the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse along with the Swiss National Bank in the city.
The Alemanni, who had already infiltrated the settlement process during what was known as the Barbarian migration, reached the Zürich area in the middle of the sixth century.
The double towers of (the Grossmünster) Great Minster are city’s landmark. According to legend, Charlemagne or Charles the Great, from the Latin Carolus Magnus built the towers at the location where the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were discovered.
Food and celebration
The residents of Zurich don’t always consume the Bircher muesli and the “Züri Gschnätzlets” (sliced beef). Food Zurich which is a Food Festival including fine food, slow food and street food held in Zurich for foodies, will be held annually from September 2016. They are real cosmopolitans and enjoy exquisite delicacies from all over the world. They do everything they can to embrace trends immediately – with creativity and delight. And this is what rewards them: It has one of the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per inhabitant in Europe. Rustic pubs, street food festivals and pop-up restaurants in abandoned warehouses are also very common. Both the culinary varieties of the region – and far more – can be enjoyed.
