Well-known village for rural customs and traditions.
The village of Appenzell looks like the pictures selected from the pages of a children’s bedtime story. There are cake shops, craft shops, delis, butchers and taverns behind the gabled houses. The river Sitter enters the city beyond the velvet green meadows, puddles and climbs into the mountains.
This is the most significant Swiss dairy country, deeply traditional and rooted in the customs of farming that have been honored for generations. Appenzell’s history and culture can be viewed in the Appenzell Museum which is located in the town hall.
The hills of Appenzell are very popular for winter walking and cross-country skiing. The Appenzell area is served by a large network of approximately 200 km of ski trails. In winter Kronberg, Hoher Kasten and Ebenalp-Schwende are popular ski areas with families.
A cableway runs between Wasserauen and the Ebenalp (1644 m), the gateway to the Alpstein hiking area and the chapel of the Wildkirchli cave, which can be reached on foot in just 15 minutes. The Aescher hostelry’s location, captured on postcards a thousand times, is even more impressive, having been precariously built into the rock face. The Ebenalp is a starting point for the hike up onto the Säntis summit.
Appenzell benefits from an especially extensive rambling trail network. Walking areas in Appenzell: the Kronberg (1663 m), which can be reached by cableway from Jakobsbad, and the Hohe Kasten (1795 m), whose summit provides spectacular views down into the Rhine valley.
