Bear Park
A common etymological theory is that Bern got its name
from the bear (Bär in German), when Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen, the founder
of the town, snagged one here on a hunting spree. Three bears still play
relatively freely in today’s spacious 6000-sq-metre open-air riverside park
dotted with trees and terraces. Since 1513 bears have been at home in Bern;
until 1857 in the town itself, then in the bear pit, and since 2009 in the new
and spacious bear park.
Visitors can see Finn, Björk, Ursina with luck as they
frolic, swim, eat and poop in the woods in the BärenPark at the eastern end of
the Nydeggbrücke.
An inclined lift (wheelchair-friendly) provides access
to the top of the steep enclosure without barriers between the riverside
walkway at the banks of the Aare.
The old bear pit and the new Bear Park can be visited.
The new park, including the caves and the Bear Bath in the Aare River, with its
green hilly terrain. There can also be booked guided tours, through which you
can learn a great history of the bear park-a peek behind the scenes.
