A mecca for flower lovers and a great place to unwind
The Rose Garden is one of the most beautiful parks in Bern with a wonderful view of the Old Town and Aare Loop. There are 220 different types of roses, 200 types of irises and moor beds with 28 different types of rhododendrons exists in this park.
There is a pavilion and reading garden for relaxing. Locals regard the park as a romantic place for dates and a common meeting place after work. Rosengarten Restaurant provides a view of the housing lines in the Old Town and a nice spot for your free time.
The Rose Garden always offers the perfect backdrop for a memorable snap, whether it is a selfie on the Albert Einstein bench, or a panoramic picture shot of Bern or a memorable shot for special events like weddings and birthdays.
An especially mesmerizing sight is the explosion of blossoms on the Japanese cherry trees in the spring. The exotic trees put on an eye-catching beauty show around the end of March and the beginning of April. Their leaves treat visitors by changing their colour into another vivid spectacle after six months.
By the way, the Rose Garden used to fulfill a completely different purpose. It served as the cemetery for the lower part of the Old Town from 1765 until 1877. Its transformation into a recreational park took place in stages, and the garden has only been a public facility since 1913.
The best place for relaxing is a pavilion with a library and attached reading garden. Book readers can peruse the shelves of the open-access library without register. You can read in the garden and return your book at the end of the day, instead of borrowing a book to take home. The library is open on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons from the end of April until mid-October.
