Emanates a wonderful festive mood - Zürich Christmas Market
Whether at Zurich’s oldest Christmas market in the picturesque Old Town, at the “Wienachtsdorf” Christmas village on the Sechseläutenplatz near Bellevue, or next to the 15-metre (49 ft.) tall sparkling Christmas tree at the Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Train Station: there is a Christmas market in Zurich to suit every taste. A huge array of presents and gift suggestions enchants tourists with the beautifully designed market stands.
On a walk around the Christmas market, there is always plenty of space for a cup of punch (for children) or mulled wine (for adults) or a delicious bite to eat, such as raclette or fondue. The Christmas markets in the city of Zurich, as well as in the area surrounding Lake Zurich, are exceptionally charming and multifaceted, with the consequence that every tourist is guaranteed to choose his or her own favorite.
- Zurich’s “Wienachtsdorf” at Sechseläutenplatz
One of the largest Christmas markets in the city of Zurich is held at Sechseläutenplatz, right in front of the Opera House.
Only a stone’s throw from the shore of the lake, Zurich’s “Wienachtsdorf” or Christmas village enchants both big and small guests. Approximately 100 market stalls are clustered together to create a convivial Christmas village against the magnificent background of the Opera House, welcoming tourists to shop and enjoy a glass or two of glühwein.
- Designer Market and Cuisine
At market stalls, evolving local designers sell out-of-the-ordinary pieces of jewelry and rare items, while a lively range of culinary delights ensures that tourists are not hungry. Whether international specialties or traditional Swiss fare in the Fondue-Chalet: the main focus is on people spending a pleasant time together in a festive atmosphere – whether with a drink of mulled wine, an excursion with friends or a candle-making experience with their children at the Bürkliplatz.
- Fun on the Ice
The ice rink welcomes ice-skating lovers of all ages to come to ice at Sechseläutenplatz and perform some pirouettes. In fact, parties should try their hand at Bavarian curling in a friendly environment.
In view of the continuing increase in the number of cases and the lack of experience with events with large crowds in times of Corona, it was not possible for us to hold the Zurich Wienachtsdorf on Sechseläutenplatz in 2020.
- Christmas Market Dörfli in the Niederdorf
Zurich’s oldest Christmas market is a tiny world of its own
Numerous market stalls line the conveniently situated Niederdorfstrasse and spill into Hirschenplatz, making it possible to lose track of time while searching the plethora of items for sale. A visit to the Christmas market in the Old Town during the Advent season is an utter necessity – even if just to take a walk and taste some mulled wine.
Suddenly there are many inviting, small houses in different places in Niederdorf. The oldest Christmas market in Zurich is coming back! Aromatic wafts of scent caress the numerous festive people in the alleys and in the squares. From the Mühlegasse to the Grossmünster!
- The Singing Christmas Tree and Christmas Market
This Christmas market is inspired by its exclusive regular concerts.
If you walk along the Bahnhofstrasse during the Advent season, sooner or later you will come across the Christmas market at Werdmühleplatz. It has also strongly developed itself amongst tourists and locals alike. Without a question, one of the main explanations for that is the special attraction the Singing Christmas Tree. Rowed up on a vertical platform in the form of an immense Christmas tree, the numerous choirs of the area shared Christmas joy with their selection of Christmas carols.
- City Christmas Market
The City Christmas Market, located between the Jelmoli and Globus department stores, welcomes tourists to shop and enjoy. It’s said that this Christmas market is serving the finest mulled wine in town – so you’re going to have to find out for yourself. Alternatively, the Christmas market in Lintheschergasse – ideally situated between Jelmoli and Globus department stores and only a stone’s throw from Bahnhofstrasse – is the ideal spot to shop and enjoy. Local traders have been offering their handicrafts in beautifully designed local huts for over 20 years now looking forward to speaking with their customers.
The 2020 Christmas market has been canceled. Unfortunately, the city Christmas market falls victim to the corona virus due to the security requirements.
The requirements of the city of Zurich, which include higher security measures than those of the federal government (BAG), unfortunately make it impossible to hold the popular city Christmas market.
- Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Station
The Christmas market at Zurich Main Train Station is one of the biggest indoor Christmas markets in Europe.
A year without a Zurich Christmas market in the main train station is enough! They want to indulge in the magic of the pre-Christmas season again as we did before and enjoy beautiful things together.
Zurich’s most popular Christmas market takes place in the primary rivalry of the Central Train Station. It is one of the biggest indoor Christmas markets in Europe with 140 stands. As soon as travelers board the station, the tempting fragrance of mulled wine and cinnamon is carried to the city.
The absolute highlight of the Christkindlimarkt is a 32-ft-tall Christmas tree decorated with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals.
- Münsterhof Christmas Market
An absolute treasure, surrounded by the Fraumünster church and the traditional guild houses.
Under the motto “From Zurich to Zurich,” visitors can find high-quality local products from the surrounding shops and boutiques.
From the famous Swiss Tirggel cookies from the Bäckerei St. Jakob to the Tsüri sauces and DillySocks, to the popular utensils, Landolt-Arbenz, on the Christmas market in Münsterhof, giving presents is pure joy. The market’s modern, elegant ambiance provides the perfect framework for all kinds of encounters relating to Christmas in Zurich. The focus here is on local businesses, Zurich brands, and high-quality products.
There is also a music tent featuring outdoor concerts, readings and lectures for children and adults alike. Historical guided tours on the Münsterhof theme round out the events on offer and render the trip an unforgettable experience.
- Christmas market in Winterthur
Follow the scent of the Christmas market
The fragrant aromas of cinnamon and mulled wine make Winterthur Christmas-like every year. Follow the scent of the Christmas market in the center of Winterthur’s Old Town, where 100 wooden chalets located in Neumarkt City are trying to shine with their festive decorations and homely atmosphere. Pleasant vendors sell anything you need for the ideal Christmas season from candles, healthy jams and gingerbread to jewelry and textiles. The Winterthur Christmas market is just 27 minutes away by train from Zurich.
- Einsiedeln Christmas Market
The Monastery Village with Charm – The Unique Atmosphere
Einsiedeln – the quaint monastery town set against the magnificent background of the majestic Benedictine monastery and spread along the main street, Einsiedeln’s Christmas market is especially well worth a visit. The delightfully lit market stalls, the enchanting homely Christmas decorations and the massive Christmas tree make tourists’ eyes glow with wonder. The collection on offer is complemented by a broad array of shops and outlets.
- Christkindlimärt in Rapperswil-Jona
One of the most popular and beautiful Christmas markets in Switzerland with around 250 market stalls.
