Brienz Rothorn Bahn

The Brienz Rothorn Railway is a tourist rack railway in Switzerland, which climbs from Brienz, at the east

ern end of Lake Brienz, to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn. The railway is 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi) long, is built to 800 mm gauge (2 ft 7+1⁄2 in gauge), and uses the Abt double lamella rack system. 

Since almost 130 years, the Brienz Rothorn Railway has written eventful history of a steam rack railway that has seen many ups and downs has provided generations of passengers with beautiful and lasting memories. The Brienz Rothorn Railway reaches a height of 2,244 metres above sea level and is the fourth-highest railway in Switzerland.

The Brienz Rothornbahn is fully operational from June to October, from October to November the train only runs to the Planalp middle station. You can benefit from a wide range of offers relating to the railway and the Brienzer Rothorn. During a stop on the Planalp, you can enjoy a delicious Heizer sausage filled with cheese and prepared in a copper kettle. There is also a rack bread, a bread in the shape of a gear, and a drink. If you would like to experience the ride through the eyes of a locomotive driver, the cab ride offers you an exclusive and unique insight into the world of steam locomotives.
