Mount rigi Cogwheel
The first mountain railway in Europe made it to this striking point of view in 1871. The Rigi kulm and its summit hotel now have two cog railways – one coming from Vitznau and one coming from Arth-Goldau. An Aerial cableway leads to Rigi-Kaltbad straight from Weggis. Visitors can enjoy the view of the summit over 13 lakes, the Alps and into the Black Forest.
The Vitznau cog wheel railway begins right on the shores of Lake Lucerne, since it is easy to combine an excursion to Mt. Rigi with a boat ride. Gentle rocking helps visitors to relax from the very beginning, since the cogwheel railway moving at a stately speed.
It is really a special experience to ride in one of the antique carriages. Passengers will enjoy the all-round view, with nothing between them and the fresh mountain air, in these beautifully restored carriages dating from 1871 to 1911. Traveling in a train drawn by steam engine no. 16 or no. 17, designed in 1923 and 1925, is a real highlight.
