Üetliberg Hiking

On Uetliberg, Zürich’s local mountain, the sun, moon and stars are close enough to touch. At 2,850 feet above sea level, Uetliberg towers over the rooftops of Zürich. The mountain affords an impressive panoramic view of the city, the lake and the Alps.

The top of Üetliberg mountain can be reached by train or hiking only. Trains run regularly from Zurich HB (main station) and take about 30 minutes.

In summer, there’s plenty to discover on well-marked hiking routes, a mountain bike route, and on the Planet Trail. This hour-and-a-half to two-hour walk from Uetliberg to the Felsenegg cableway in Adliswil takes you on a fascinating tour through a model of our solar system.

At Felsenegg you can take a gondola down to Adliswil. Then walk down the hill along a residential street to reach the train station in about 5 minutes. Take a train back to Zurich HB (about 25 minutes).

It’s a beautiful hike any time of year. There is a pleasant cafe and restaurant, aptly named Gasthaus Felsenegg, just beyond the gondola station which is worth stopping for a restorative drink or two.

Before You Set Off

– check the weather as it can change suddenly

– wear/take a hiking jacket and layers

– hiking boots (in early March there was snow on the ground in some places)

– sun / rain protection

– sunglasses

– take water / snacks

– don’t forget your camera!
