The Aare Gorge: An impressive display of the power of water
Aareschlucht, also known as the Aare Gorge, is a section of the river Aare. The river runs through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen. The Aare River eroded a path and carved out a gorge in the limestone that is 200 metres deep in some places over thousands of years.
The Aare Gorge is almost 200 m long, and just over a meter wide at its narrowest point between Innertkirchen and Meiringen. This fantastic gorge is a simple 40-minute walk along the 1.4-km long route with disability friendly and wheelchair accessible from the western entrance to the middle of the gorge. The public hiking trail across the Lammi Pass can also take you back. The hike takes about one hour.
The gorge can be explored on a system of safe paths and tunnels. On both sides of the Aare-gorge you can find entrance / exit, (if both entries are open). It returns to the other end of the gorge with the MIB train.
Getting there: The Meiringen-Innertkirchen train takes you directly to stops on the western and eastern entrances of the gorge.
