Staubbach Falls
The Staubbach Fall is the third highest waterfall in Switzerland, located just west above Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Highlands. The waterfall drops 297 metres (974 ft) from a hanging valley that ends in overhanging cliffs above the Weisse Lütschine.
Anyone who has ever wanted to meet one of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “muses” is in the right place in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The Prince of Poetry was inspired by the imposing Staubbach Falls for his work “Song of the Spirits Over the Waters”. Staubbach Falls is one of the 72 waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and is located right next to further water spectacles such as the Trümmelbach Falls, which are cut into rock. In the summer the latter Falls are accessible by means of a narrow path and a rock balcony.
The force of the stream above the fall at such times is sufficient to carry the water clear of the precipice, and the whole mass descends in a condition of liquid dust, between spray and cloud, that sways to-and-fro with the gentlest breeze.
