Albert Einstein’s rented flat
The Einstein House is located in the center of the Old City at Kramgasse 49, just some 200 meters from the Clock Tower (Zytglogge).Â
Albert Einstein spent a part of his life in Bern. In 1902, he came to the capital of Switzerland and took up a post at the federal patent office. He moved to third floor of Kramgasse 49 apartment with his wife Mileva and son Hans Albert in 1903. It is exactly in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The apartment is open to tourists today.
Albert Einstein developed Relativity Theory in Bern from 1903 to 1905. The Einstein House offers visitors a chance to see where our view of space and time was truly revolutionized by the great physicist.
The exhibition gives an idea how Albert Einstein could have lived and in what atmosphere his most significant scientific work was made.
