Mount Rigi
In a majestic setting where three lakes meet
The Rigi, also known as the Queen of Mountains, is majestically towering between the Lucerne, Zug and Lauerz Lakes. It’s a typical Swiss green landscape with meadows, forests and grazing cows. At 1.797 meters of altitude, the highest point on the Rigi Kulm is to enjoy a beautiful panorama over the Lucerne Lake and the surrounding Alps and over the Swiss plateau facing north.
The unique location of the Rigi back in the 18th century made it a popular destination for travelers across Europe. Queen Victoria was even carried up the peak in a sedan chair in this pioneer mountain of Alpine tourism. The Mass tourism of modern era began in 1871 with the construction of Vitznau-Rigi Railway, the first mountain railway in Europe.Â
There are still some old trains running today with public nostalgia trips scheduled on weekends between July and September. These 100 years old restored steam locomotives use about 500 kg of coal and 2,200 liters of water on one trip up the mountain.
Winter
Visitors are welcome to take part in winter sports such as five ski lifts with 15km of ski and snowboard pistes, an airboard piste, 7km of tobogganing runs, a 14km panoramic ski run as well as 35km of groomed winter hiking, snowshoe and Nordic walking trails. Those looking for a more relaxed experience can book a horse sleigh ride.
Summer
The Rigi with over 100km of hiking paths and 15km of Nordic walking trails is real paradise for hikers. The major altitude differences can easily be conquered by cable car or mountain railway. Visitors love to hit Rigiland in Kaltbad, where they can find an extensive play area for children the Wildmannlipfad trail, a mini-golf course, picnic areas and a natural pond complete with Kneipp path.
