Grossmunster
The Grossmünster is a Romanesque-style Protestant church in Zürich, Switzerland. It is one of the four major churches in the city (the others being the Fraumünster, Predigerkirche and St. Construction of this Romanesque church was begun in 1100 and it has since been rebuilt and renovated several times.
Together with the Fraumünster and St. Peter’s Church, it is one of the best-known churches in the city. Its characteristic twin towers are the actual landmark of Zurich. In keeping with the Romanesque architectural style, Grossmünster offers a great carved portal featuring medieval columns with grotesques adorning the capitals.
Its colorful and eventful history includes headless saints and an infamous argument over sausages. The ensuing argument, known as the Affair of the Sausages, is now considered to be the trigger for the Reformation in Switzerland.
