Martigny
Martigny surrounded by vineyards and orchards is the capital of the district of Martigny in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It lies at an elevation of 471 meters, and its population is approximately 15000 inhabitants.
Martigny and its surroundings are very close at only 50 minutes by car on a beautiful mountain road. The present road was opened in 1957. There is a beautiful museum that is definitely worth a visit. The Pierre Gianadda Foundation is a perfect activity for a rainy day in Chamonix.
The archaeological walk is perfect for taking in the Roman ruins. La Bâtiaz Castle gives magnificent views our over the plains of the Rhône. The Fondation Pierre Gianadda welcomes the biggest names in painting, with a splendid sculpture park and the world’s largest collection of Swiss motor vehicles. Skiers and boarders of all levels can find their perfect runs here. Famous for its vineyards, the cultivation of fruit trees, chestnuts, and the hot baths at Saillon. The baths are great for those bad weather days, or just to relax. There are four thermal pools, fitness areas, beauty salons, saunas, jacuzzi’s and more.
Also the town offers sights and activities like the Morand Distillery, the Moulin Semblanet mill, the Museum of Science of the Earth, the Town Hall and Town Manor. Key events like the Valais Fair, the Festival des 5 Continents and the region’s time-honoured meat festival, Foire au Lard, attract many visitors each year.
