Glarus
Glarus is the capital of the eponymous canton. Two-thirds devastated by fire in 1861, the town is 19th century’s creation with a few traditional rural timber houses only that survived the flames. The Glarus is a varied holiday region but it also has a long industrial history, particularly in the manufacturing of decorative textiles.
In the 19th century, the Glarus developed a global reputation for its printed fabrics. The 50 km long industrial trail allows cyclists to discover evidence of Glarus’s industrial history. There are regions of family winter sports on the Kerenzerberg above the Walensee with opportunities for skiing, tobogganing and snowshoe walking as well as many other winter sports. You can also enjoy the winter footpaths in the Glarus with peace and quiet environment.
The hiking region of the Klöntal with the Klöntalersee is a naturally beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. There are many sights in the Glarus that testify to its extraordinarily rich history of geology and mining, for example, the Engi quarry, the Elm slate factory, the Kerenzerberg fossilized sea creatures, and the Tödi dinosaur tracks.
