Gstaad
Gstaad is a town which attracts a charming mix of visitors in the German-speaking section of the Canton of Bern in southwestern Switzerland. The winter campus of the Institute Le Rosey is located in Gstaad. Gstaad has a population of about 9,200 and is located 1,050 metres (3,445 feet) above sea level.
The St. Nicholas chapel was built in the town in 1402, while the murals are from the second half of the 15th century. The town was dominated by cattle farming and agriculture until the great fire of 1898. The history of the Destination Gstaad is deeply rooted. The world of Gstaad’s mountain railways and cableways has a number of interesting facts to interest you.
Since December 2019 the Destination Gstaad operates its brand new panoramic gondolas, whisking snowsports enthusiasts and nature lovers up to the Eggli, our local mountain. Over a thousand cultural and sporting events are available to visitors every year, including top events with an international reputation.
In winter, 200km of pistes at altitudes of up to 3000 metres above sea level await skiers and snowboard riders. Several snowparks and numerous toboggan runs as well as 42km of trails for classic- and skating-style cross-country skiing are at the disposal of visitors. In summer the place is open for hiking (trail network of over 300 km), mountain biking and paragliding.
